The U.S. Department of Transportation has directed Silver Airways to continue passenger service in four Mississippi cities and one in Alabama through Sept.  5.

Government officials say they need more time to review proposals for new subsidized air service in Tupelo, Greenville, Hattiesburg, Meridian and Muscle Shoals, Ala.

The order extends the airlines service for 30 days...

An earlier order would have expired this week.

Silver Airways announced in April it was ending service to those cities.

Greenville, Tupelo and Muscle Shoals have recommended Seaport Airlines as the new commercial carrier for their airports. Meridian and Hattiesburg will get new air service, beginning Nov. 1, with Express Jet.
